Field/laboratory assistant in Field Crops Pathology

Students will assist researchers working on soybean, corn, dry bean, and wheat diseases in the Field Crop Pathology lab.

The Field Crop Pathology lab is seeking applicants for at least three research assistant positions, open April-August 2018 (with possible extension into fall semester) in the Department of Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. Research assistants will be expected to work in the lab, outdoors, alone, and with team members. Majority of work will be in the field; work will include setting up plots, planting, and disease rating, but may also consist of field sampling, sample processing, and data entry. The position is based on MSU campus in East Lansing, MI. Field work will be within driving distance of campus and work vehicle will be provided. In the lab, research assistants will be responsible for making culture media, autoclaving, sterile transfer of pathogens, DNA extraction, and PCR.

Qualifications

Strong interest and desire to work in biological sciences or plant pathology. Attention to detail and the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a research environment. A valid drivers’ license is required, as well as the willingness to become a certified pesticide applicator (training provided). Applicant must be willing and able to work in the field under a variety of weather conditions. No previous field or lab experience is required. Students that are working toward or have recently received a degree in a biological science are preferred.
